I have circled back to the visual arts after a career teaching Renaissance and Canadian literature – in Alberta, Arizona and Newfoundland, and most recently, at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. I work primarily in acrylics – sometimes combined with pen and ink – and photography, and tend to produce “series” as I explore the potential of new subjects, techniques or media. Whether working on botanical studies, portraiture, life drawing or landscapes – and whether striving for high realist detail or abstraction – I am drawn to the elegance of shape and line. My favourite subjects could be called “micro-landscapes” or “natural abstracts.”

Having had no formal arts education, I have benefitted immensely from participation in the community of artists associated with the Meta4 Contemporary Craft Gallery in Peterborough, summer workshops at the Gallery-on-the Lake at Upper Buckhorn Lake, an intrepid group of outdoor artists who carried on painting during the COVID slowdown, and, more recently, two artist collectives – Studio 201 (formerly Kawartha Artists Gallery and Studio) in Peterborough and A Place for the Arts in Bancroft.
